Challenge Accepted: Preeya

“I’m a GP, I’m a mum of two, and I’m also an author and a TV presenter. I’ve taken up the NNT Dare to Wear Challenge and I’m testing out these scrubs in the real world.”

Dr Preeya Alexander is particularly passionate about preventative health, preconception care, and mental health, all of which she can cover in general practice.

“I have lots of passions and this is the place where it all comes to life.”

She keeps herself busy with multiple gigs outside of her role as a General Practitioner. As an author, she’s written books for kids, like Rainbow Plate, as well as books for parents, like Eat Sleep Play Love. She likes to deliver digestible, evidence-based health information to the community to help people make informed health decisions; that’s why she started writing books and built up her profile on social media.

“It can be tricky to maintain empathy and compassion when you’re exhausted and burnt out. Self-care, looking after my body and brain, is critical to help me stay connected, compassionate, and empathetic.”

For Dr Preeya, managing stress is an art that she has perfected over time. It boils down to getting enough sleep, practicing meditation or mindfulness, and eating lots of rainbows. What are rainbows, you ask? When she talks about rainbows, which is often, she means a range of fruit and vegetables, usually in a multitude of colours to make up a delicious rainbow.

“A big way I manage stress is through physical activity, which means getting out and walking as much as I can. If I can get Wally on the lead and have a moment to myself where I’m walking outdoors - chatting to him, listening to the birds – that helps me big time.”

Having her stress under control makes Dr Preeya a better doctor. It keeps her feeling empowered and calm in the consulting room, even when things are chaotic or she’s running behind schedule. By being physically active, she’s practicing what she preaches and role modelling for her patients, which really adds weight in the consulting room.

“I love my NNT scrubs, they’re so comfy. I’ve got heaps of room to move so when I’m doing things on the examination bed, like a cervical screening test or examining a knee, they’re perfect for that movement.”

Besides loving the colours and the look of the scrubs, Dr Preeya was a big fan of the fit and the stretch. They allowed her to stay mobile with patients, enjoy a fast-paced dog walk, and squat during her grocery shop to pick produce and smell flowers.

“I’ve been wearing my NNT scrubs out in the real world, I’ve been able to walk Wally, do all my normal jobs, get rainbows for the kids, and I’ve had a whole day in the consulting room.”

The team stuck with Dr Preeya for an entire day while she well and truly put her scrubs to the test. Her verdict?

“My NNT scrubs are a clear pass for the Dare to Wear Challenge.”

As a busy mum and GP, Dr Preeya praised how easy the scrubs are to wash and wear repeatedly. Their durability, roomy fit, and the way they look all made the NNT scrubs pass with flying colours.
