"I play cricket for the Brisbane Heat and I’m a registered nurse in the emergency department. I’m here for the NNT Dare to Wear Challenge."

Laura is a batter for the Brisbane Heat women’s cricket team and works part-time as a registered nurse in a busy Brisbane emergency department.

“I started cricket for a bit of a laugh and then got serious.”

Laura and her sister, Grace, have both become professional cricket players. Laura’s earliest memory of playing cricket is being in the backyard over summer holidays and mowing a pitch in, wrecking the grass and angering their mum.

“Something I love about nursing is seeing people appreciate the small differences you make. It’s an amazing feeling to know you’re helping someone.”

Time management is difficult, but Laura says she doesn’t believe anything in life is perfectly balanced and it’s about prioritising. She counts herself lucky to have reasonable workplaces. In season, her healthcare workplace supports her cricket career, and vice versa during off season.

“Teamwork in cricket and teamwork in nursing is quite similar. Cricket is probably the most individual team sport you can play, and nursing is the same. You’re in a team environment but, at the end of the day, you’ve got your allotted patients, and your key role is to look after them.”

With both roles requiring patience and a calm demeanour, Laura says it helps to stay focused on each task as it comes. Whether it’s hanging an IV bag or focusing on the next ball, she says being a task-oriented person has primed her for both environments. .

“The scrubs are great for mobility, which is what you want in the nursing field but even more so for hitting cricket balls.”

In terms of comfort, Laura found that the scrubs moved with her easily, allowing her to play cricket like she normally would, including stretching, batting, and running. She especially loved how the mint colour of the scrubs resembled her cricket team colour, appearing vibrant and identifiable while still looking good.

“The NNT scrubs are outstanding. They work for cricket, they work for nursing – what more could you want?”

Laura’s verdict was clear: the scrubs hit it out of the park, passing the NNT Dare to Wear Challenge with ease!
